Associate Professor Dr. Berkay Akmaz was born in 1985 in Izmir. He began his medical journey in 2003 at Gülhane Military Medical Faculty and graduated from Ege University Faculty of Medicine in 2010. After achieving a high rank in the Medical Specialization Examination, he was accepted into the Ophthalmology and Surgery Department at Dr. Lütfi Kırdar Kartal Education and Research Hospital. He completed his specialty training in 2014 and began his official career in the field of ophthalmology.
After his training, he worked as a physician at Katip Çelebi University Atatürk Education and Research Hospital. Between 2019 and 2021, he worked at Manisa City Hospital, continuing his clinical practice in ophthalmology. In 2021, he was appointed as the Head Assistant at the Ophthalmology Clinic of Izmir Bozyaka Education and Research Hospital. In the same year, he was awarded the title of Associate Professor in Ophthalmology and Surgery by the Higher Education Council.
As part of his scientific work, Dr. Akmaz received a TÜBİTAK postdoctoral research scholarship and worked as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the Wilmer Eye Institute at Johns Hopkins University Hospital in the United States for one year. During this time, he focused on research in cornea, cataract, ocular surface, and refractive surgery. He completed the European Ophthalmology Council Diploma, earning the FEBO title, and after passing the International Council of Ophthalmology exams, he earned the FICO title.
Throughout his over fifteen years of professional life, he has performed over 10,000 surgeries. He has published more than 40 articles in national and international peer-reviewed journals and has been involved in academic activities such as translation, writing book chapters, and serving as an editor for books. Proficient in English, Dr. Akmaz continues his work in the field of ophthalmology and surgery at his clinic in Izmir Alsancak, utilizing advanced technological resources.
