Dr. Tansu Erakgün was born on March 20, 1968, in Izmir. He completed his middle school education at Saint Joseph College and his high school education at Karşıyaka Gazi High School. He entered Ege University Faculty of Medicine in 1986 and graduated in 1992. In the same year, he began his residency in the Department of Ophthalmology at Ege University Medical Faculty Hospital. After completing his training, he earned his specialty title in ophthalmology in 1997.
After his specialization, Dr. Erakgün focused on retinal diseases and vitreoretinal surgery, gaining experience at international centers such as Dr. Zivanovic Clinic in Antwerp, Belgium, and Dr. Eckardt Clinic in Frankfurt and Duisburg, Germany. In 2004, he earned the title of Associate Professor, and in 2010, he became a Professor. Throughout his academic career, he has primarily focused on surgical treatments for diseases such as retinal detachment, diabetic retinopathy, macular holes, epiretinal membranes, and ocular trauma. He has also performed intensive surgeries in cataract surgery cases and has completed over 15,000 surgeries in total.
Dr. Erakgün has developed surgical instruments, including the "Erakgun spatula knife" and "Erakgun snare," which have been accepted by various centers for use in vitrectomy surgeries. He has published articles in national and international journals and actively participates in scientific environments. He has worked in the Turkish Ophthalmological Association’s Vitreoretinal Surgery, Medical Retina, and Ocular Trauma units, sharing his experience at various events and meetings. He is also a member of organizations such as the European Vitreoretinal Society and the American Academy of Ophthalmology.
In 2013, Dr. Erakgün left his position at Ege University and continued his work at Özel Kaşkaloğlu Eye Hospital in Izmir. He is fluent in French and English, is married, and has two children.
